Number 1 Stuffie

It’s been exactly one year since I first posted to Sarah’s Yarn on Instagram, so I whipped up this Number 1 Stuffie to commemorate the occasion! I was inspired by the Alphabet Cuddlers by 3amgracedesigns, so if you like this little guy, be sure to go check her out!

Notes:

  • This pattern has not been tested. If you find any errors, please let me know by shooting me a DM on Instagram!
  • Numbers in parentheses at end of rows 26 – 33 indicate total stitch count in those rows.
  • Stuffie is constructed by making two identical 1’s and seaming together

Tools and Yarn Needed:

  • Worsted weight yarn (less than half a skein) – I used Big Twist Sincerely in Confetti Cupcake
  • Small bit of black yarn for mouth
  • 5mm crochet hook
  • 9mm safety eyes
  • Tapestry needle
  • Polyfil stuffing

Stitches Used:

  • Ch – chain
  • Sl St – slip stitch
  • FSC – foundation single crochet
  • SC – single crochet
  • SC2TOG – single crochet two together (decrease)

Pattern:

First number 1 piece:
Row 1:
FSC 27
Row 2: ch 1, sc across, turn
Row 3-6: repeat row 2
Row 7: ch 1, sl st 6, sc 15, turn
Row 8: ch 1, sc 15, turn
Row 9-24: repeat row 8
Row 25: ch 1, sc 15, ch 7, turn
Row 26: starting in 2nd ch from hook, sc 21, turn (you should be getting 6 sc in the chains from prior row, plus 15 into the sc in prior row for total of 21 stitches)
Row 27: ch 1, sc 19, sc2tog, turn (20)
Row 28: ch 1, sc2tog, sc 18, turn (19)
Row 29: ch 1, sc 17, sc2tog, turn (18)
Row 30: ch 1, sc2tog, sc 16, turn (17)
Row 31: ch 1, sc 15, sc2tog, turn (16)
Row 32: ch 1, sc2tog, sc 14, turn (15)
Row 33: ch 1, sc across (15)
Fasten off.

Second number 1 piece:
Repeat instructions for first piece, but do not fasten off.
Attach safety eyes to this layer about 4 stitches apart in row 21.
Using your black yarn, stitch a small mouth below the eyes. (The lowest part of my mouth is in row 15, and it stretches up on sides to row 18).

Assembly:
Layer your pieces facing up with the second layer on top (so your stuffie is looking up at you). Using your working yarn, begin to SC around, putting 3 stitches in each corner. Once you are halfway up second side, begin stuffing with polyfil.

Firmly stuff with polyfil and sc around. Sl st to first sc of border and fasten off.

Weave in your ends, and you’re finished! If you share on Instagram, please let me see by tagging #sarahsyarn or @sarahsyarn and using #numberstuffie.
